Custom Cedar Board-and-Batten Shutters in Covington

Out with the chalky vinyl, in with real wood. This Covington home swapped plastic for clear, kiln-dried cedar—built to handle Gulf Coast heat, humidity, and surprise downpours.

What we built

Board-and-batten design: Tight, even gaps for drainage; full-width battens; stainless fasteners throughout.

Smart prep: Back-primed on all sides, sealed end grain before assembly, joints glued with exterior adhesive, fasteners countersunk and plugged.

The finish (made for Louisiana)

Primer that blocks tannins: High-build, stain-blocking alkyd to keep cedar oils from bleeding.

Flexible seams: Paintable, moving caulk so nothing cracks with seasonal changes.

Topcoat: Two sprayed coats of premium acrylic-urethane with UV protection. We dialed in a deep, architectural black—rich, not ashy.

Install details

Stainless hardware with stand-offs for airflow and longer life.

Set for proper clearances so they swing right and shed water.

The result:

Crisp shadow lines, real-wood character, and a bold black that makes the light siding pop. Better curb appeal today, and a cedar + primer + urethane system that’s ready for Covington weather tomorrow.
